Portrait Photography: Nurse Pretty Girl

Posted on October 27, 2014      by admin

Today makes it one year since I met my girlfriend, Julia, who I affectionately call Nurse Pretty Girl. We met by chance at a Buckhead Church singles gathering. I was a volunteer for said event, and really didn’t feel like going that night, but did anyway since I had made a commitment to be there and help out with it. She was only there that night because one of the leaders was a friend of hers and asked her to come out for it that night. She wasn’t signed up to be there, but, lucky for me, she was.

She  had a unique beauty and eloquence to her that stood out to me, but there seemed to be a fun goofiness that I saw wanting to come out in her at the same time. I found her pretty attractive, but really didn’t think she’d have much interest in me since she was a good 6 inches taller than me with her cowboy boots on. I really approached talking to her that night from a business perspective. She worked for a large corporate medical clinic that I could possibly end up shooting for, and that’s the angle I was working. Business.

Oddly, she apparently cared nothing about my work that night. I found out after dating her for a month or so that she had never even been to my website. This was shocking to me since my work is such a large part of my life.  Yet, she seemed to be most interested in just – me. This somewhat concerned me to begin with, because I felt that she didn’t really get how important my work is to me, and how hard I’ve worked at it. I felt like maybe she didn’t really “get” me. It really concerned me then, and sometimes still does. But – looking back on it all now – I see this as a plus. She didn’t get me then, and still doesn’t in some ways, but, she seems to accept me. And that is huge to me.

Over this past year she has dealt with dating a guy that is pretty much always taking a photo, processing a photo, thinking about a photo, or thinking about how to get somebody to pay him to take a photo. She also is a pretty private person, yet has had to deal with me taking photos of her and then posting them online for the whole world to see.  Not really understanding at first that a lot of it is a way for me to express appreciation and love for others. To express appreciation and love for her.

So, to thank her for her patience and trust, I have decided to post all of my favorites I got of her in this past year here, along with the captions I originally posted with them. It’s a visual collection of good memories for me. Thanks for being a big part of a great year, Nurse Pretty Girl.

Dec 18th 2013 :: “This portrait is a little different than my typical healthcare photography work due to its more personal nature. This is Julia, and she’s an infection control nurse at a local outpatient surgery center. I took this the other day after she had a very busy day at work and came straight over to my place afterwards. On her way over she warned that she was still in her gray scrubs as if she was embarrassed for me to see her like that. I expected her to be looking kind of rough – yet – she looked like this. I promptly told her she looked beautiful and sat her down in front of my camera to show her that. This portrait is the result of that effort.”

Dec 20th, 2013 :: “This is Julia, and no, that is not a prison jumpsuit she is wearing. They’re scrubs. She’s a nurse – and she’s a goofball. The other day she came over after work to ride around and look at Christmas lights with me looking like this. Yes. Those are flashing Christmas light bulb earrings hanging from her ears. And yes, she actually wore them while treating patients. I’m not one to let such a Kodak moment slip through my fingers, so I threw up some red seamless paper in my apartment and quickly did this available light portrait for your Christmas viewing merriment. I was too busy to get Christmas cards designed and sent out to my clients as usual this year, so me posting this photo here is going to have to do. Merry Christmas, Y’all.”

July 4th, 2014 :: Julia firing an AK-47 this morning. She also shot an AR-15, a 9mm Sig, and a variety of .22 pistols and rifles. It was a good time. She shot well. Now, we are off to the beach, sans semi-automatic rifles…

We just finished watching fireworks on this same beach with friends, and now I’m about to stuff my gut with BBQ. Best 4th of July I can remember having – ever.”

July 9th, 2014 :: “This really captures Julia to me. She has a terrific relationship with her family – especially her father – and it has always been this way from what I understand. It is pretty amazing to me to see how this has likely effected her as a grown women. She seems to be absolutely void of insecurities and totally comfortable with who she is. She dreamed of being a nurse when she was four, and now she is one. She’s passionate about what she does for a living, and I think she’s really good at it as a result. She’s a Christian. She is smart. She takes good care of herself. She has friendships she has maintained for years – some since she was a little girl. She can cook. She is organized. She is extremely level headed and calm tempered. She doesn’t spend money foolishly. She is very chill, almost like she is on Xanax 24/7 – but she isn’t. All these things combined make her a very rare these days as far as women go. I see all of these things when I look at this photo of her. I’m one lucky guy. “

August 9th 2014 :: “The birthday girl preparing to race last night at Andretti Indoor Karting & Game. It came at no surprise to any of us racing with her that she had the fastest lap time AND the fastest average lap time. She’ll make you feel like you need a helmet just like this when riding with her in Atlanta traffic. Matter of fact, maybe I should do a portrait of her in a racing jumpsuit, helmet under her arm, and her car in the background. Real dramatic lighting from a low angle. I can already see it..”

August 12th, 2014 :: A Shining Soul On A Gloomy Day.  It is a gloomy day today here in Atlanta, but I’m sure that’s only because Mother Nature didn’t have Julia’s birthday penciled in on her calendar. She looks sad here, but that’s not an accurate representation of who she is. She is a shining soul that’s been lighting up those around her for 29 years today. Happy Birthday, Nurse Pretty Girl”

Sept 29th, 2014 :: “iPhone Portrait: I spend a huge amount of time at home working by myself. Sometimes it’s great, but, sometimes it can get pretty lonely. The other day Nurse Pretty Girl came over while I was working and just hung out on my couch, so all I had to do was rotate my chair around, and this was my view. What a nice change of scenery – she looked better than anything I had on my computer screen. I don’t know how I managed to get anything done at all with her here. I actually didn’t get much done, and it’s all her fault… “
