Atlanta Camera Operator: The Birth Of Cool, Music, and Advertising

What Christmas Means to Me from Buckhead Church on Vimeo.

This past Sunday I shared a photo of a trumpet player looking like The Birth Of Cool himself. I also mentioned that I was running a video camera and covering the horn section during the opener for the service this past Sunday. Well here is that opener, and you can see what kind of fun it was.

I often see people filming musicians at concerts while dancing the whole time. This drives me nuts because I know it will make for some really unpleasant video to watch. You want your movements to be very slow and deliberate, but also match the feel/tempo of the music being played.

Well, when I shot this footage I was on the stage in front on the horn players, on my knees, and was dancing a little to the beat as I shot looking up at the horn players – shooting as wide as the lens would let me. I think it actually worked to give the more fun and upbeat look I felt the director was going for. Make sure you stick around to the end for the sax solo to really see what I’m talking about.

It was a good time. And as a bonus, I talked to all of the horn players backstage in the Greenroom – because I’m a music nerd – and learned that I’d actually heard the trombone player perform before, even though I thought I’d previously never heard any of their names. He toured and played with The Tedeschi Trucks Band as part of their horn section. So, I had heard him play with them back in Macon a couple of years ago. If you’ve never heard of The Tedeschi Trucks Band and are into blues/roots music, do yourself a favor and check them out as soon as possible.

The music business seems to be a lot like the advertising business in that everybody is tied together in some way or another. Even if you don’t know the person, have never worked with them, and might even think you’ve never seen or heard their work – there is a good chance you have. And somebody you know or have worked with previously has worked with them.

So, yeah enjoy the video and talent of the musicians performing. They don’t let anybody on that stage that isn’t really good at what they do, and you can hear that here.

Just listen to them. I love music – and Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Y’all.
