Commercial Real Estate Photography: It Pays The Bills

Sometimes people think I’m not interested in, or capable of, shooting anything other than people. I understand why they would think this, since that’s all I show in the galleries here on my website. And yes, working with people and photographing them is what I seem to excel at, but I still like shooting other things occasionally too. Architecture, interiors, product, food. I’ve shot most everything at some point or another. I’ve yet to shoot cars, but that’s about it.

The work I’m showing is a few of my favorites from a recent five day commercial real estate shoot I did. The objective was to create the best shots possible, given the existing conditions, for the client to show other perspective tenants that are considering one of their properties for their business.  The bad part of the job was that I was having to shoot during normal business hours at all of the locations, making it where I could not go in and light things as I would normally while shooting a location. I was restricted to only my camera and my tripod. It was tough not being able to do the shots as well as I could do them, but it was also fun having the challenge of still making the shots look as good as possible while working within the restrictions and time I had. I had to jump through hoops for a couple of them in order to get the shot, returning a few times, but I got the shot.

It was worth it. The client seems very happy with what I delivered, and I’m extremely happy to have done it for them. Is it anything glamourous I shot? No, not really. But it is bread-and-butter type work, and I like bread-and-butter type work. It keeps my lights on and my belly full.

This is the waiting area for a blow out bar. Women come to this place just to get their hair blow dried. Not cut. Not colored. Just blow dried. The lengths women go to look nice blows my mind sometimes. I very much appreciate their efforts though.

One thing I love about my job is diversity of environments it takes me to. This job had me in bars, restaurants, a doctors office, a dentist office, a bank, a police department, and this place. This is where the traffic in Sandy Springs is monitored, and where they attempt to do something about it when it gets bad.

I delivered these shots both in color and black and white with the black and whites for this particular stairway being my favorite of the two. There was bad color shifting due to the difference in color temperature between the daylight coming through the window, and the warm incandescent bulbs in the room. There was no way for me to fix this in camera given the circumstances I was working in, so one way of dealing with it is to take the color out altogether. In this case it works really well, because this space is more about the design and lines of this stairway than it is about its color.

This looks like a straight forward shot of the exterior of a building. Which it is. Kinda. THe shot straight out of camera looks as if the building is leaning due to me looking up at it. So here I’ve corrected the perspective so it looks like it is standing up straight, like it really is.

This was taken in a children’s dentist office. It was a really fun environment.
