iPhone Portrait: Where Is Your Home? Where Is Your Heart? Where Is Your Treasure?

I’m use to seeing panhandlers in Atlanta, but yesterday in Valdosta, GA I saw this guy, Toby, and his cousin, “Gator” at the exit ramp I take when headed home to my folks place from Atlanta. Both he and his sign really stood out to me because panhandlers aren’t so common in Valdosta, and I was only about twenty-five miles from home at that point, or where my heart is. It made me wonder where their home was, and why they were so far away from it — geographically and emotionally — on Christmas Eve. So, I found a place to park, walked over, introduced myself, and I found out. They’re from Ohio and were making their way there as they could. I ask Toby if I could do a portrait of him due to his sign saying far more than he may have realized, or most people may realize: There’s a very popular Bible verse that his sign brought to mind that says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What a powerful question to ask yourself at Christmas. Is your heart wrapped around some materialistic crap on Santa’s sleigh that doesn’t really matter — or is it wrapped around those you care about? Hopefully the latter. Merry Christmas, Everybody.
