Landscape Photography: 30 Seconds Of Beauty From Minnehaha Falls

This past Labor Day weekend Julia and I made a trip up to the beautiful North Georgia mountains for a couple of days. While there, she took me to her favorite waterfall. As soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to photograph it – not so much for me – but for her. So, the next morning we made it a point to get up really early  by my standards (but not hers) to go back for me to photograph it in the early morning light without any kids playing on it at all, as they were dangerously doing the prior day when we were there.

I felt kind of bad because, rather than just enjoying her favorite waterfall with her, I was busy that morning getting the best shot I could of it for her. She didn’t know that at the time though. The above shot is 30 seconds of water flowing from it as I held the shutter open for that amount of time. By the time she reads this, she should have a print of it to hang on the wall of her place.

Of course, I couldn’t bring myself to stop shooting there, even though the last thing I needed to be doing is creating more work for myself as far as post production goes. The following are some other shots I took for fun while up there:

This is Peter Dietrich, an artist that is based near where we were staying. After riding by his place a couple of times and seeing his work out, I asked Julia to stop to check it out. I had no intention of doing a portrait of him when I did, but, this is what I left with. He was an interesting guy, and I very much admired the life he appeared to be living. He had his studio right there by the road, and just behind it was what appeared to be a very small and modest cabin. It appears that he is living a pretty simple life, which, in my eyes, is pretty luxurious – and smart. Peter’s place is on Bridge Creek Road in Tiger, GA. If you’re interested in buying any of his work, he can be reached at this number: 941.321.5799

This is the dock she and I were hanging out on and swimming from on Lake Burton. That is a beautiful lake. The water is very clear, it felt great, and all the mountains around it made it a totally new experience for me. I had never swam in a mountain lake prior to this. I shot this one with my iPhone.

I took this with Julia’s waterproof point-and-shoot camera. It’s not the greatest camera, but, it being waterproof makes up for that. While I was out swimming around in the middle of Lake Burton with it, a rain storm came up with no warning. There was no thunder at all, and no sign of lighting, so, since I was already wet, I just stayed out there and let it rain on me. This is one of the somewhat surreal shots I got while out there. It was a very cool experience being out in this awesome lake that looked and felt great, with rain falling around you. I’m just glad it didn’t start hailing while I was out there. That would bave been bad…

This is another rain shot from the storm on the lake. No, this is not all that great of a shot, but I love the single drop of water coming up in the center of the frame, and the upside down reflection of the mountain and sky inside of that single droplet. Yes. I am a complete photo dork.

A barn somewhere outside of Clayton, GA. I stopped to photograph it, and realized that the fence in front of it was more interesting than it was just by itself, soooo…

It started out as a photo of a barn, but at heart, it was always a photo of a fence. I took and processed this one with my iPhone.
